Our Mission
The Noise Abatement Society (NAS) was established in 1959 and is the only UK national registered charitable foundation whose sole focus is to help stop excessive and unnecessary noise to protect the public and improve the aural environment.
In 1960, recognising that exposure to persistent, unwanted sound was detrimental to human health and wellbeing, productivity and quality of life, our founder John Connell OBE lobbied the Noise Abatement Act through the UK Parliament making noise a statutory nuisance for the first time in the UK.
Working closely with policy makers, researchers, industry and the public for over 60 years, the NAS has forged a reputation for collaborative partnerships to find practical and sustainable solutions to noise problems for all.
NAS operates the UK's only free National Noise Helpline in the UK to give support, advice and guidance to the public on noise issues. This is a vital conduit through which the Society gauges and responds to current public concerns, providing valuable data to inform and liaise with policy makers and from which all its campaigns are based.
The NAS also leads the way in solving noise problems through conducting groundbreaking research; has launched an international low-noise eco testing and labelling programme; works with global peers to develop international soundscape standards; and campaigns and provides outreach to educate, inform and support the public and stakeholders.
